The Three Best Friends that Anybody Could Have

No words were spared when she was called by her father’s last name— In fact she wasn’t all that mad about it. It’s just the emphasis he put on it that ticked her off. So what she did was raise her camera and take a picture of the both of them before saying, ‘Did you know some cameras are known to seal the souls of the people they capture?

I thought that was a fun fact.’ Careful boys.

Punishment. This was clearly punishment sent by God for reading nothing but R-18 doujins during his entire weekend last week. For a good five minutes, a pregnant silence filled the air. The boy was pretty much frightened speechless (the fact that he was staring at the female in fear probably didn’t aid his case either.) Sporadically, a coughing fit erupted from the third year.

“Oh, would you look at the time! I’m late for basketball practice.” Even though practice ended about thirty minutes ago. “Bye!” And he books it.

“… tch. Baka.” Though he has to admit that the look he was receiving from the girl (which wasn’t a glare, but more of a rather eery blank stare, in his opinion) gave him the creeps a little. Still, he’s not going to run off in a panicked manner like his friend had. Of course not. He’s going to be a civilized student.

” … well. Good day to you, Nina.” Cough. Who the hell said ‘good day’ anymore, especially at his age - “I’ll just … go now.”

And a few steps away, he totally books it.

‘Nina L—’ She stopped herself before speaking anymore, remembering this boy wasn’t part of such clubs as the Photography club nor was he close to her. He wouldn’t really recognize her by “Li” really. ‘—Matsumoto. I wouldn’t be surprised if you don’t recognize me since I sit behind you…and you’re usually nose deep in a different manga every time I glance at you.’

As blunt as usual. She truly was a hard girl to understand, let alone make friends with.

“M-manga?” Crap - did he forget to be discreet and cover the manga with a book cover? No, no, he’s fairly positive he remembered at all times to bring along some sort of cover for, say, math, to disguise his manga … except for perhaps that one ti - drat. Though … then again, since she sits directly behind him, it wouldn’t be impossible for her to be able to see the drawings from over his shoulder …

Dammit. Time for his lying skills to come out.

“You must be mistaken.” Cough. That look of horror went away in less than a second as he adjusted his glasses with a finger. “I don’t read manga - too childish and unfitting for a second year.” Cough.

‘Just because you can’t kick a ball straight doesn’t mean you should destroy his dreams.’ She actually says this because it’d be pretty funny watching him make a fool of himself— that and everyone’s allowed to follow their dreams no matter how stupid.

image

“…” For five seconds, his dreams were crushed. Totally and completely. If it weren’t for the lovely Nina cutting in, he most likely would have began sulking in a corner, picking at the dirt or something else in an overdramatic fashion. “Did you hear that, Nathaniel?” Oh, he was asking for it. “Matsumoto-san thinks I should follow my dreams.” Now he was really asking for it.

“Yes, I heard, Akiyama.” Oh it is on.

“Though you do realize she’s simply saying that so that she doesn’t have to witness your usual bout of pitiful depression in the corner? Who do you think you are, Tamaki Suoh? Please. It’s unbecoming of an upperclassman.” At least he isn’t busting out his umbrella yet. Yet.

I’ll have you know that kicking a ball straight is not as easy as it looks, and even so it is a completely worthless talent to have, as it will not benefit you in the future whatsoever, and -“

“… ahem.” Cough. He’s just … composing himself now. You didn’t see anything. Not at all. Just calmly adjusting his glasses.

Nathaniel? Now, she recognized him. He was literally the only boy in her homeroom class that had a non-Japanese name. And as for recognizing him from the back, that was because she sat directly behind him in the second row.

‘You— you’re in my homeroom class,’ she replied, her expression actually different from before. This time she wore a genuinely surprised face and that was because, well, she really was pretty surprised at this new development— a maybe a little embarrassed that she didn’t recognize one of her classmates. That certainly proves how much she really pays attention to the students in her class—

—but then again, it could be his fault for always having his nose in a book.

… is that right … ?”

Another glance at the girl, trying to see if her words held any truth. Well, they probably did, since … what reason is there for her to be lying to begin with? Now that he really thought about it, he’s able to recognize her somewhat, though he never cared enough to pay attention to anyone at school (save for Tara, but that’s a different story). “… oh yes. I remember now.” Somewhat. All he can really remember is seeing her sitting in the seat behind him as he walks into class - which is a sight he happens upon every single day, so it probably should be familiar.

“Ah … though I seem to have forgotten your name …” Mumble. Oh well. Not like he really cared enough to learn until now.

I’m going to join the swim team! Says the naive little raven after watching a certain KyoAni swimming commercial for the seventh time. Tara, no, basketball and swimming are not the same, you idiot.

sigh.

“You do realize that swimming and basketball have absolutely nothing in common save for the fact that you have to exhaust yourself through physical activity?” Translation: he thinks you’ll drown yourself.

Now he looks insulted. Did she do something wrong? Everything she said seemed sensible to her. It was perfectly logical to thank someone for the common courtesy she normally didn’t receive. It was also natural to find someone who apologizes when it isn’t their fault in a way.

Well, best to just settle in the middle and say they were both at fault—

image

Wait a second— ‘Hold on.’ When he turned around to move along, Nina suddenly realized he was incredibly familiar. Now who exactly did she recognize only from viewing the back of their head? ‘What’s your name?’

And now she wanted him to come back again? Really? Really? Girls. He just won’t understand them, and frankly, he’s not quite sure if he wants to. An internal sigh as he halts in his step again, adjusting the shoulder strap of his bag (full of some actual books, figurines he needs to fiddle with, and manga, of course - what else would be in there?) as well as his glasses before turning back around, making sure that his facial features are back to their usual blankness.

“… Nathaniel.” A slight scratch at his cheek. (Another anime habit - he really should fix those.) “Any particular reason as to why you felt the need to inquire?”

‘Weird.’ Perhaps it was a good thing she took a picture of him instead. This was the first time someone’s apologized to her for not only walking through a photo, but when her own inability to pay attention to people outside of her own world was at fault. This boy was weird.

Off popped her lens cap again and Nina found herself looking at him through the camera. Sometimes when seeing things or people out of the ordinary, cameras work as a way to see what’s beyond even what she can see, like possession— though, she’s never seen anyone get themselves possessed by dark spirits or demons before. ‘But you don’t look possessed. I guess your personality is just strange,’ she added as she lowered the camera, brown eyes gazing up at the student.

image

‘Thank you for your apology though…no one’s ever really said anything like that to me before— at least not sincerely.’

“E-excuse me?”

Girls. He’ll never understand. She apologizes, he accepts it. He apologizes, she accuses him of being weird? Really? She’s the one trying to take a picture of a ‘pagan spirit’!

And then there she goes, uncapping her camera and looking at him through it and he’s the weird one?! So much for being polite.

Girls.

He just won’t understand them. Especially this one. (Posse>s<s“… you’re … welcome … I suppose.” Girls. “… I … should be on my way then …”
